FAQs

  • Sleep is natural and happens all by itself. If you have insomnia, that may be hard to believe. But there was a time before you had insomnia, and you will sleep naturally again. Most insomnia starts after some precipitating factor: a major life change, new work pressures or even a job loss; relationship difficulties or pressures, a move to a new city, academic pressure, or an illness. All of these things are situations that would disrupt the sleep of anyone. Yes, it’s normal for sleep to be interrupted by all these stresses and more. Insomnia happens not because of these stresses, but our reaction to them. A few nights or a couple weeks of interrupted sleep isn’t insomnia. But beyond that time, when we are afraid of more sleepless nights, and we develop anxiety about lack of sleeplessness, and our wakefulness, well, that’s insomnia. Insomnia is characterized by that anxiety.

  • Insomnia often affects people who naturally have a strong need to have control, who are overachievers, and who are very health conscious. All of these traits are strengths, as long as life is going according to plan. When something interrupts the plan, that can be scary. And for many people nothing is scarier than not being able to sleep. The media is full of information about how much sleep we need and what a threat lack of sleep can be. So of course a few night’s lack of sleep will be scary. And most people naturally thing sleep is under our control. So having something as important as our sleep triggers anxiety. The more we think about our need for sleep and lack of sleep, the more anxious we become. Some people suffering from insomnia develop panic attacks. This is quite normal under the circumstances and will pass as you learn more about how to deal with insomnia through The Sleep School program.

  • The Sleep School program offers two options for sleep coaching.
